Paris is one of the worlds most popular holiday destinations, and counts more than 30 million visitors every year.

The city with its metropolitan area has almost 12 million inhabitants, and is known as the capital of France. The “city of light” is another lovely expression for Paris. It comes from the historical fact of the early electrical street light, compared to other European cities.

© Serban Enache | Dreamstime.com

The French metropolis is situated next to a river called “Seine”, which is also one of the most important tourist attractions.

It’s told the name of Paris comes from a Gaulish tribe who were called “Parisii”.

© Michal Bednarek | Dreamstime.com

The area around Paris has a long human history. The first archaeological signs of permanent habitation date from around 4200 BC. It shows that this location was always a very good place to be.

The most successful economic parts of Paris can be found in the western and southern suburbs. In those places it was possible to change from traditional manufacturing into high value-added services and high-tech manufacturing. Their salaries are one of the highest in Europe. But there is also a lot of unemployment and poverty in Paris.

© Rostislav Glinsky | Dreamstime.com

The climate of Paris can be described as “oceanic”. It’s affected by the North Atlantic Current, and does not experience much of extremely high or low temperatures.

© Elena Elisseeva | Dreamstime.com

In the middle of the 19th century Paris began to change its face from a labyrinth of narrow streets and half-timber houses, into a modern city with wide avenues lined with neo-classical stone buildings.

© Alexandre Fagundes De Fagundes | Dreamstime.com

The tourist attractions of Paris are just overwhelming. Important museums, beautiful parks and castles, historical buildings, world famous art galleries, traditonal French restaurants and coffee houses. There is so much to see and explore in France, that it’s almost impossible to be bored.

© Roman Kazmin | Dreamstime.com

The most popular time visiting Paris is the Easter week. The whole year through there are not such crowds of tourists as in that certain week. So if you enjoy a rather calm and relaxing holiday in Paris, you should not come through Easter time.

It’s also interesting to know that all national museums are open free of charge on the first Sunday of the month.

There are a lot of museums in Paris. Le Musée de l’AP-HP shows the medical history of Paris. Visit “Le Musee des Arts Decoratifs” if you want to know more about the last eight centuries of Paris. Carnavalet is another museum of Paris history. It also shows interesting artifacts of the French revolution.

Centre Georges Pompidou is a museum of modern art, and the building of the museum is an attraction itself. You can also find a Picasso Museum, and a museum of arms and armor from Middle Ages until today.

It’s also possible to find out more about Napoleon Bonaparte, probably one of the most famous Frenchmen in history.

© Alexandre Fagundes De Fagundes | Dreamstime.com

But the greatest and finest museum in Paris is “The Louvre”, which can be found in the centre of the city. The Louvre is the leading museum in the world of art, art-history, and culture. The Louvre is also known as the world’s most visited art museum.

© Andrea Presazzi | Dreamstime.com

The museum was established in 1793, and has 35.000 pieces displayed over the surface of 60,000 square metres.

© Leszek Wilk | Dreamstime.com

The military museum of war “Musée de l’Armée” was opened in 1905, and counts to one of the largest military museums in the world. The visitor can find a lot of different weapons from all important time periods.

The museum also presents Napoleons’s tomb in the church at the Invalides, which is a part of the whole building complex (Les Invalides).

This is the museum of fashion, which is located in Palais Galliéra on the Avenue Pierre 1er de Serbie. The museum presents clothing and professional uniforms from 1735 to the present day.

This monument can be found close to the Eiffel tower.

The “Arc de Triomphe” is one of those famous monuments in Paris. It’s dedicated to the soldiers who fought and died for their country. Especially soldiers of the French army of Napoleon.

© Leszek Wilk | Dreamstime.com

The Arch of Triumph has a height of almost 50 metres. The construction works of the monument took 4 years. The first design was done in 1806. In 1810 the building was completed.

Of course also the Eiffel Tower should not miss in the list of the most important monuments of Paris.

The Eiffel Tower is made of iron and located next to the Seine river. The expensive construction works of the impressing building were completed in 1889. The tower has a height of 300 metres, and weights 10.000 tons.

The cuisine of Paris has a very high reputation. The tradition of restaurants which offer finest dining began over 220 years ago.

There are a lot of possibilities in the centre of Paris to enjoy the highest standards of French cooking.

But there is also a danger to receive bad meals with high prices. Especially in places with a lot of tourists. Avoid such a bad experience, and try to search for restaurants a bit away from tourist attractions. Try to eat where the locals go. Then you should receive good food and great service.
